US President Donald Trump hosted Vladimir Putin at a military base in Alaska on Friday evening, Hungarian time, to persuade the Russian president to end the conflict that not only Ukrainians, but also the majority of Russian society, consider completely unnecessary. However, the meeting did not yield many results, at least for now.

As Index wrote in its Saturday editorial, quoting the iconic line from the 2021 series Chernobyl: The Trump-Putin meeting ended with a bad, but not tragic outcome. After the disappointing Friday, rumors were already circulating on Saturday about what was said behind closed doors between Trump and Putin. The Russian president is likely asking for the entire Donbas, the heart of the Ukrainian economy, among a series of other demands, while promising little in return. However, until now we did not know what was said between the two leaders directly when they met on the runway of the Elmendorf-Richardson Base, but a lip reader speaking to Metro has now described the entire conversation, which may have sounded something like this.

Trump-Putin conversation on the runway

Trump first told Putin:  "Well, it's great that you're here."

To this Putin said:  "Thank you, I'm glad too. I'm here to help you."

Trump: “I will help you too.”

Putin replied, pointing to Trump: “All they have to do is ask.”

Trump: "Okay."

Putin: "I'll calm things down" - probably referring to the ceasefire with Ukraine.

Trump: “I hope so.”

The politicians then headed to the stage, where the presidential limousine awaited them. Trump continued,"The pressure is on. Do you want the big news?"

Putin nodded: “Tell me the sensational news.”

However, what the US president said next is incomprehensible due to the lack of context. Trump said “It’s cargo fuel,” which either means “this [something]” is fuel for a cargo ship or fuel that is carried as cargo by a plane/ship. Unfortunately, this is incomprehensible due to the lack of context.

After they arrived at the podium to have their photo taken with the Russian leader, Trump said,"Thank you. Let's shake hands, it makes a good impression."

To this, Putin nodded in agreement, shook his hand, and said, “Thank you.” The pair then got into Trump’s “Beast” limousine and headed for the meeting, where the Russian president also said something to the media that we still don’t understand.

You are ignorant!

They were already sitting in front of the press when a journalist asked the Russian president if he would call a ceasefire and stop the massacre of Ukrainian civilians. Putin grimaced and shook his head, then put his hand to his mouth, which many interpreted as meaning that he had no intention of calling a ceasefire. However, the Russian president also said something that the microphones did not record.

According to Hickling, the Russian president first told the journalist (in English) that  “you are ignorant,” then quickly realized that this was not correct, touched his mouth, and corrected him, saying, “you are ignorant.” The “you are,” which Putin said, means both that you are something and that you are something, the president presumably wanted to emphasize that he specifically considered that one shouting journalist ignorant, not all of them, he just got tangled up in English grammar and said  “you is,” which is indeed singular, but incorrect.
