On behalf of the Senate, the President of the Board of Directors, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, supported President Claudia Sheinbaum's defense of Mexican migrants following the raids by the United States government in the city of Los Angeles, California.

At a press conference, Fernández Noroña also expressed his solidarity with Gavin Newsom, the governor of that state, recognizing his"courage."

"All my support and solidarity with that man and not pieces," he stated, while urging the"border czar," Tom Homan, who is in charge of massive raids that are"openly racist and violate U.S. law itself," to learn about the history of California, which was founded by Mexicans.

“I would invite Tom Homan to visit Olvera Plaza in Los Angeles, where the city was founded, and to see the names of the people who founded it. I would invite him to reflect on the name of the city; it's not called The Angels, it's called Los Angeles. I would invite him to learn a little more about the history of California, whose capital is called Sacramento, the main cities, the beautiful cities of San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Fresno, Santa Ana, San Bernardino, El Cajon. I would invite him to reflect on the fact that Los Angeles has a 70 percent Mexican population. It is the city with the largest population in the world, after Mexico City,” he said.

Fernández Noroña recalled that Mexicans “were stripped of these territories. We were settled there before the nation known today as the United States. The Treaties of Guadalupe-Hidalgo establish rights for the people settled in those territories, which were not respected. (…) How can the United States government talk about liberating Los Angeles and California? Liberate them from whom? The Mexicans who are settled in that place are settled in what has been their homeland,” he emphasized.

He also highlighted that Mexican migrants are a pillar of the United States economy, as California alone is the tenth largest economy in the world.

He also condemned the fact that President Donald Trump's government is closing off any possibility of regularizing their immigration status, because - he said - it is in the country's economic interests to do so.

“California’s economy is the most powerful economy in the United States; if it were a country, it would be among the ten most important economies in the world, and the people of Mexico who emigrated to the United States contribute with their work and effort; they didn’t come to steal. We have been robbed. They didn’t come to steal, they didn’t come to lend a hand, they didn’t come to beg, they didn’t come to ask for mercy, they didn’t come to ask for anything. Everything they have they have earned with their work and their effort, and it is the United States government that does not open a window to regulate their immigration status because it suits the economic interests of the United States. It is unacceptable. It is discriminatory treatment, it is infamous treatment, it is reprehensible treatment,” he denounced.

The Senate President announced that he will make a statement at the Standing Committee session next Wednesday and will open the door for all parliamentary groups to debate and take a position on the matter.

On the other hand, he ruled out participating in the demonstration in front of the United States embassy in Mexico that his fellow party member Guadalupe Chavira is calling for. Fernández Noroña announced that he will undertake “something more forceful,” which he will announce in due time.
