The leaders of some European countries discussed among themselves the conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Earlier today, the US president spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, leaders of NATO countries and European leaders to tell them what he had discussed with Putin.

The conversation was attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, BTA reported.

United Kingdom

The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be defined without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said Keir Starmer. The British prime minister praised US President Donald Trump for his"desire to end the bloodshed."

"President Trump's efforts have brought us closer than ever to ending Russia's illegitimate war in Ukraine. His leadership in seeking to end the bloodshed is commendable. While progress has been made, the next step must be further negotiations involving President Zelensky. The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be resolved without him," Starmer said after a series of talks with Western leaders.

Italy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin discussed security guarantees for Ukraine during their summit a day earlier in Alaska.

"The key point remains security guarantees to prevent new Russian invasions, and this is the aspect where the most interesting developments in Anchorage were noted," Meloni said in a statement.

She noted that Trump had highlighted an earlier Italian proposal regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, “inspired by Article 5 of the NATO Charter.”

"The starting point of the proposal is the definition of a collective security clause that would allow Ukraine to benefit from the support of all its partners, including the United States, ready to take action in the event of a new attack," Meloni pointed out.

France

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for pressure to be maintained on Russia until a stable and lasting peace is achieved that respects Ukraine's rights. Following a series of diplomatic contacts in the framework of the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Macron wrote on the social network X today that it is"essential to draw all the lessons of the last 30 years and in particular from Russia's well-established tendency not to respect the commitments it has made."

The French president also welcomed the United States' readiness to contribute to providing security guarantees for Ukraine, which should accompany any peace agreement. Macron said that France would work with the United States and its partners in the"coalition of the willing" to make progress towards a lasting peace with security guarantees. According to the French president, the coalition members will meet in the near future.

Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is further coordinating his country's positions with European partners following his conversation with US President Donald Trump.

"Today, after a conversation with President Trump, we further coordinated our positions with European leaders. They are clear. A real peace must be achieved that will be long-lasting, and not become another pause between Russian invasions. The killings must stop as soon as possible, the fire must cease both on the battlefield and in the sky and against our port infrastructure. All Ukrainian prisoners of war and captured civilians must be released, and the children abducted by Russia must also be returned. Thousands of our people are still being held captive. They must all return home. Pressure must be maintained on Russia while its aggression and occupation continue," Zelensky wrote after his conversation with EU leaders.

The Ukrainian president added that in his conversation with Trump he had emphasized the strengthening of sanctions against Russia if a trilateral meeting does not take place, or if Russia deviates from ending the war."Sanctions are an effective tool. Security must be guaranteed reliably and in the long term with the participation of both Europe and the United States. All issues that are important for Ukraine must be discussed only with the participation of Ukraine, and no issue, especially territorial, should be resolved without Ukraine," Zelensky stressed. He thanked the partners for their help.

European Commission

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said strong security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe were essential for any peace agreement to end the war.

"The EU is working closely with Zelensky and the US to achieve a just and lasting peace. Strong security guarantees that will protect the vital interests of Ukraine and Europe are essential," von der Leyen wrote.

Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is holding an emergency cabinet meeting after a phone call with US President Donald Trump about the results of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Merz contacted ministers by phone at 10:30 a.m. He intends to discuss the results of the meeting between Trump and Putin with them.

Hungary

"The world is a safer place after yesterday's meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska," Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said today.

"For years we have witnessed how the largest nuclear powers have eliminated the framework of their cooperation and sent messages to each other. Now that is a thing of the past. Today the world is a safer place than yesterday," Orban wrote on the social network Facebook.

Denmark

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called for caution and described the situation as uncertain.

"In my eyes, we are in a situation that is at least as precarious as it was before," Frederiksen said in an interview with Danish state television."There was no ceasefire and there was no agreement. On the contrary, the Russians bombed all night, and for me this is clear evidence that Russia does not want peace," she stressed.

For the Danish prime minister, whose country holds the rotating six-month presidency of the Council of the EU until the end of 2025, it is crucial that Ukraine continues to receive support and that Europe rearms. “When I woke up this morning, my first thought was that we need to accelerate the rearmament process even further,” Frederiksen stressed.

Slovakia

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he welcomes the process launched by US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska to end the war in Ukraine, and the coming days will show whether major European Union countries will support it.

“The presidents have started a vital process in Alaska,” Fico wrote, distancing himself from most Western allies by visiting Moscow twice since last year and refusing to provide official military aid to Ukraine.

"The coming days will show whether the major players in the EU will support this process, or whether the failed European strategy of weakening Russia through this conflict with all sorts of, literally incredible, financial, political or military aid to Kiev will continue," Fico concluded.

India

India welcomes the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and appreciates the progress made during the meeting, an Indian foreign ministry spokesperson said today.

"The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine," the Indian spokesman stressed.
