The Ukrainian president met Jonas Gahr Støre at Gardermoen before traveling on to Sweden.
Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena Zelenska landed at Gardermoen Airport on Wednesday morning. The visit was kept secret until the Ukrainian presidential couple landed.
– I warmly welcome the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, and First Lady Olena Zelenska. Norway stands with Ukraine in its desire for a lasting and just peace, as the Ukrainian people deserve, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who is at Gardermoen to meet the president.
Støre and Zelensky have talked, among other things, about Norway's support for Ukraine and plans for continued support into 2026, the Prime Minister told the press after the conversation.
– Thank you very much, Jonas. We are very happy to be here and very grateful for the great support from the Norwegian people, says Zelenskyj.
– Russia is not stopping, and therefore we must continue our cooperation, he says.
Provides 1.5 billion for gas purchases
The visit to Norway is part of Zelenskyy's tour of Europe. Shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the government announced that Norway will contribute an additional 1.5 billion kroner to secure electricity and heat for Ukraine.
The support is provided in cooperation with the EU and will contribute to the country's energy needs, the government writes in a press release. The 1.5 billion is included in the Nansen program, where the government has proposed a total support of 85 billion kroner in 2026. Military support accounts for 70 billion of this.
– Ukraine faces another demanding winter, and the supply of electricity is unstable. Together with the EU, we are further stepping up efforts to ensure that Ukrainian households, businesses and institutions have access to energy, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
– Norway's support for Ukraine is strong and continues. It is crucial to have close dialogue with Ukrainian authorities so that the support meets the needs on the ground in Ukraine.
A solution other than the battlefield
Støre met with a full press after accompanying Zelenskyj to the plane.
Aftenposten asked him, among other things, what he thinks about the fact that many Ukrainians say they have lost faith in diplomatic solutions, and that they believe the war will be decided on the battlefield.
– I do not believe this is a war that will end on the battlefield. The suffering could persist for several years if this continues. Therefore, I believe that responsible countries outside must work to find a solution, Støre replied.
He sees it as important to involve the Americans in order to achieve this.
Will announce defense news in Sweden
After the meeting with Støre, the Ukrainian president traveled on to Sweden. Here he will meet with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Linköping.
The topics for the meeting in Sweden are Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the bilateral defense cooperation between Sweden and Ukraine.
After the meeting on Wednesday afternoon, the two leaders will hold a joint press conference where they will present major news about Swedish defense exports.
Zelensky and Kristersson will also visit fighter jet manufacturer Saab, which is located in Linköping, the Swedish Prime Minister confirms to Reuters.
– Ukraine's Zelenskyj and I will look at one of the world's absolute best fighter jets.
Already in September, the Kyiv Post wrote that Ukraine will receive Saab Gripen fighter jets from Sweden.
