NATO's Military Response and Operations

Russian Military Exercises and Activities

Last Sunday, Russian occupation forces launched their largest airstrike against Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war. Tensions rose further when a group of Russian drones entered the airspace of NATO member Poland on the night of September 10.

According to The New York Times, these attacks represent a new level of aggression, and also reflect a broader information campaign being conducted by the Kremlin.

The publication recalls that after his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska on August 15, Vladimir Putin avoided talking about Ukraine for some time. However, he later took up the topic again - during his visits to China and the Russian Far East.

According to analysts, Russia's escalating attacks and Putin's statements send a clear message: Moscow is determined to dictate the terms for ending the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday called for a joint air defense system with Kiev's European allies, accusing Russia of"deliberately targeting" neighboring Poland by launching drones through its airspace in an overnight attack.

"Ukraine has long been proposing to its partners to create a joint air defense system so that the Shahed, other drones and missiles would be guaranteed to be shot down by our joint combat aviation and air defense forces," Zelensky said on social media.

On Wednesday, Poland mobilized its own and NATO air defense forces to shoot down drones flying in its airspace following a Russian air attack in Ukraine.

According to the BBC, it was the first time since 2022, when Russia's war in Ukraine began, that a NATO country had directly attacked Russian targets in its airspace. Poland called the violation an act of aggression.
