According to NBC News, the Washington administration said it has"full confidence" in FBI Director Kash Patel, amid criticism of the investigation into the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Patel wrote on social media on Wednesday that a suspect had been detained, but less than two hours later he returned to announce his release.
"Director Patel is working day and night on this case. Anyone who questions his determination and dedication, especially when Charlie was a close friend, is engaging in a disgusting act of political play. Justice is the priority, and the perpetrator will face the full force of the law," a White House official said.
Federal authorities continue to search for the attacker, without providing further details about possible suspects or the motives for the incident.
