President Volodymyr Zelensky has provided hints on the outcome of the “Coalition of the Willing” meeting in Paris on Thursday.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who co-hosted the meeting, said Europe is “ready” to offer the security guarantees Ukraine needs ahead of the Thursday meeting but was tight-lipped on details.
Zelensky, who attended the meeting in person, said the discussions touched on the contribution of each coalition member towards Ukraine’s security “on land, at sea, in the air, and in cyberspace.”
“We coordinated positions and reviewed elements of security guarantees. I am grateful to everyone for understanding that the main security guarantee is a strong Ukrainian army,” Zelensky wrote in his X update.
An unnamed Berlin official told AFP before the meeting that Germany’s role would center on boosting Ukraine’s offensive capabilities, including possible joint production of long-range cruise missiles on Ukrainian soil with German financial and technical support.
Poland had previously suggested that logistics support would be its key contribution, ruling out the deployment of troops.
Foreign troop deployments to help deter a future Russian invasion – which remains a taboo subject for some coalition members – were not mentioned in Zelensky’s update, despite some nations having expressed willingness to send troops.
Zelensky also said all participants agreed that Moscow is dragging out the negotiations and prolonging the war – though it’s unclear if that includes the US, as President Donald Trump held a separate follow-up call with the coalition, the details of which have not been disclosed.
Zelensky reiterated calls for more sanctions on Moscow, adding that Japan is preparing more punitive measures.
“Support for Ukraine must be increased and pressure on Russia must be intensified. Preparations for the 19th EU sanctions package are underway. Japan is also working on sanctions measures,” he wrote.
backstop,” with Trump in recent months showing greater willingness to support the coalition’s efforts.
Zelensky also thanked Trump for his support without elaboration.
“I would like to give special thanks to President Trump for all his efforts to end this war and for America’s readiness to provide support to Ukraine on its part,” he concluded.
