Gaza Military Incident

Israeli Government Response

Forensic officers collect evidence at the Jerusalem shooting scene.

On the 8th, Israel experienced one of its worst attacks in recent years in a Jerusalem suburb. Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a bus stop at Ramot Junction, killing six people and injuring 11, six of them seriously. Israeli police characterized the incident as a"terrorist attack."

Reuters reported that dashcam footage captured the moment a bus pulled to the side of the road erupted in a barrage of gunfire, sending passengers and pedestrians fleeing in panic. Another video showed the bus's windshield and windows riddled with bullet holes.

"I suddenly heard a burst of gunfire and ran as fast as I could, feeling like I was going to die," survivor Ester Lugasi recalled in a hospital interview.

Emergency services reported the victims included a 50-year-old man, a woman in her 50s, and three men in their 30s. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar later confirmed the sixth victim had died. Police said the attacker arrived at the scene in a car and attacked before being killed. Guns, ammunition, and a knife were recovered.

Although the Palestinian extremist group Hamas did not admit responsibility for the attack, it praised the shooter; Islamic Jihad also expressed approval of the action.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting the scene, said the military and police were working tirelessly to track down anyone who assisted the attacker.

The international community has also expressed concern and condemnation over the incident. The European Union (EU) and French President Emmanuel Macron have called for an immediate end to the violence and stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in the conflict centered in the Gaza Strip. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed his"deep shock" on social media, offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
