As we revealed in a previous article, energy experts were anticipating a new record for electricity consumption in Morocco, in the context of an unprecedented heatwave across almost the entire national territory.
After checking, a source at the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) confirmed that electricity consumption reached a new peak of 7,940 MW at evening peak on Monday, June 30, exceeding the record of 7,620 MW recorded on June 19 at 9:30 p.m.
The new record exceeds the peak recorded at the end of July last year (7,560 MW) by 380 MW, an increase of 5%.
This phenomenon is mainly due to the massive use of air conditioning or fans for cooling, but can also be explained by the use of agricultural pumping for irrigation needs.
According to the International Energy Agency, air conditioning is one of the drivers of growth in electricity demand worldwide due to the increase in heat waves.
This June's heatwave is the earliest ever recorded nationwide. Typically, electricity consumption records are set towards the end of July.
This new consumption record was achieved without interruption or limitation; ONEE, as the guarantor of the national electricity supply, has sufficient capacity to cope with the changing demand. It is no coincidence that ONEE was asked to provide assistance to its Spanish counterpart, Red Electrica, following a massive power outage that occurred on April 28, affecting the entire Iberian Peninsula.
