In Kharkiv, 17,000 children went to underground schools today
About 17,000 children in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city that is a frequent target of Russian attacks, started the new school year today in schools built underground, reports Reuters.
At the beginning of the school year, seven such schools were in operation, and the mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, announced that three more schools would be opened in the coming period.
Six Kharkiv metro stations were also converted into schools.
"Today we opened two schools in the district of Nova Saltivka. The depth is really important for the school. It is big, there are 1,500 students here," said Terekhov, stating that these are the schools that are among the closest to the border with Russia, of those that work normally.
Teachers at an underground school in a Ukrainian city encourage children upon arriving at school to quickly go inside, then descend three levels underground down the stairs, holding hands.
Younger and older children attend classes in fully equipped classrooms.
