Budapest meeting canceled! White House official announces there are "no plans" for a Trump-Putin meeting in the "immediate future"

Tuesday, October 21

There are"no plans" for a Donald Trump-Vladimir Putin meeting "in the immediate future", a White House official has told the BBC.

Also, a meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, which was scheduled to take place this week, is no longer"necessary" after they had a "productive discussion" on the phone.

The White House official told The Hill that"an additional meeting between the secretary and the secretary of state is not necessary, and there are no plans for President Trump to meet with President Putin in the immediate future."

The information comes after Trump told reporters last week that he expected to meet with Putin "in about two weeks" in Budapest, Hungary, following a phone conversation. However, it seems that between Trump's statements and the current moment, something has changed plans.

New plans for truce

According to the BBC, on Monday, Trump accepted a ceasefire proposal backed by Kiev and European leaders to freeze the conflict on the current front line.

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met in Alaska in mid-August for talks on ending the war in Ukraine. So far, the talks have produced little progress, and critics have alleged that Putin is stalling Trump to prevent the US from providing additional weapons to Ukraine.
