On Friday, US President Donald Trump signed what he himself has referred to as the big, beautiful bill.
It happened just before 6 p.m. local time in Washington, or midnight Norwegian time.
The bill, which is about 900 pages long, passed by a vote of 218 to 214 after an emotional debate in the House of Representatives. Two of Trump's Republican colleagues voted against it, as did all the Democratic representatives.
The bill, which was passed and has now been signed, will fund Trump's immigration crackdown. It also makes his 2017 tax cuts permanent, and is expected to strip millions of Americans of health insurance.
Air show
As planned, the signing ceremony was held on the South Lawn of the White House on July 4, American Independence Day.
Hundreds of Trump supporters were in attendance, including White House staff, members of Congress, and soldiers and their families. As part of the celebration, there was an air show featuring stealth bombers and fighter jets.
"I've never seen people so happy in our country, because so many different groups are being served: the military, civilians of all kinds, jobs of all kinds," Trump said.
Estimated huge increase in debt
The President thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune for guiding the bill through both chambers of Congress.
"We are getting the biggest tax cut, the biggest spending reduction and the biggest investment in border security in American history," Trump said.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the U.S. national debt will increase by nearly $3.3 trillion by 2034 as a result of the budget. This comes on top of the current debt level of $36.2 trillion.
