US President Donald Trump, the leaders of Ukraine and several European countries, as well as NATO and the EU, will participate in a"virtual meeting" on Ukraine on Wednesday. It will take place two days before the meeting between Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. This was announced today by a spokesman for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, quoted by Agence France-Presse and BTA.
The conversation, organized at the initiative of Berlin, will focus on"preparation of possible peace negotiations", on issues"related to territorial claims and security guarantees", as well as on possible"additional actions" to "put pressure on Russia", said a statement by spokesman Stefan Cornelius.
The participants are"the heads of state and government of Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, the EU presidency, the European Council president, the NATO secretary general, as well as the US president and his vice president," Berlin listed.
According to Bild magazine, this German diplomatic initiative will take place in two stages: first, there will be a video conference between the leaders of European and EU countries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and then they will participate in a second video conference meeting, where they will report the results of their talks to Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance with the aim of reaching a common position before the planned meeting in Alaska - a state that the US purchased from Russia in the 19th century.
During the meeting between Trump and Putin, a possible"territorial swap" agreement to end the war in Ukraine is expected to be discussed, the US president announced.
