US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines near Russia on Friday, in response to threatening words from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev - Reuters reports.

Trump tweeted that he had “ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to the appropriate regions, in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just words.”

He called the former Russian president's statements extremely provocative. Trump said words matter and often lead to unintended consequences."I hope this won't be one of those cases."

Trump and Medvedev - who is also the vice chairman of the Russian Security Council - have messaged each other several times in recent days after Trump said Moscow had 10 days to accept the ceasefire in Ukraine or face serious tariffs.

Medvedev accused Trump of playing the “ultimatum game” and then reminded him that Russia still had nuclear weapons. Trump told him to be careful what he said, and now announced the movement of nuclear submarines.

The Russian state news agency, TASS, asked the Pentagon about where the submarines were being sent, but has not yet received an answer.

Trump also spoke out against the war in a previous post. He wrote that he had recently learned that almost 20,000 Russian soldiers had died in this “ridiculous war” this past month, and that 112,500 of their soldiers had died since the beginning of the year. Ukraine also has heavy losses, with Trump saying that 8,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died since the beginning of the year. He concluded his post by saying that this war should not have started.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin, in the company of the Belarusian president, spoke about wanting a stable and lasting peace in Ukraine, but gave no sign of giving in to anything, the Guardian reports.

Putin also said he hoped that Russian-Ukrainian peace talks would continue, but warned against excessive expectations. He said the war issue should be addressed “in the context of European security as a whole,” which he previously interpreted as a withdrawal from NATO. He said,

Meanwhile, he also announced that they are already mass-producing their new medium-range missile, the Oresnik, which he claims is impossible to intercept. According to Putin, the first shipments have already arrived at the army.
