Firefighters in the Algarve were called into action today as several wildfires broke out across the municipalities of Portimão and Monchique, all within a few kilometres of each other.
One blaze is still being actively battled in the Descampadinho area of Mexilhoeira Grande, Portimão, not far from the Algarve International Racetrack. The fire broke out at around 4pm and is being battled by 54 firefighters, aided by 18 vehicles and four aerial units.
Less than an hour earlier and slightly further south, in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, another blaze flared up, drawing additional firefighting resources.
Meanwhile, just a few kilometres away in the neighbouring municipality of Monchique, a third fire broke out in the Casais area. That operation mobilised 55 firefighters and 21 vehicles. Authorities later confirmed that both the Mexilhoeira Grande and Casais fires were brought under control and were in the resolution phase by late afternoon.
