Iran is"ready to resolve matters (...) at the negotiating table," Pezeshkian continued. Israel and the US"cannot enforce unfair claims by force," the president said in the phone call. The Islamic Republic has been forced into military conflict in defense,"and I hope we are never forced to fight again," Pezeshkian added.
Pezeshkian's statement came shortly after Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Pezeshkian declared that he would respect the ceasefire as long as Israel also adheres to its terms.
Mission not over
According to Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, Israel's fight against the Islamic Republic continues undeterred."We have completed an important phase, but the operation against Iran is not over yet," Zamir said, according to army sources, without providing details on what this would look like from now on. Israel is now entering a new phase, he said."Now the focus is again on Gaza—to bring the hostages home and overthrow the Hamas regime."
Regarding the war in Iran, the Israeli military chief further stated:"We have set back Iran's nuclear project by years, and the same applies to its missile program." These figures cannot currently be independently verified.
No regime change
Trump now appears not to be seeking"regime change" in Iran after all."Regime change leads to chaos," he said on Tuesday on his flight to the NATO summit in The Hague. Just the weekend, he hadn't ruled out the overthrow of the leadership in Tehran following the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. Echoing his own slogan,"Make America Great Again," he added, in capital letters,"Miga!" (Make Iran Great Again).
Now, when asked about a coup in Iran on Air Force One, he said:"I don't want that. I want everything to calm down as quickly as possible." The US intervened in the war between Israel and Iran overnight into Sunday and attacked the three Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. According to Trump's account, they were completely destroyed.
On Monday, Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. It is now in effect – despite violations the US president has accused both sides of. Israel launched a major attack on Iran on June 13 and has since bombed nuclear facilities and military installations in the country. Iran, in turn, attacked Israel with missiles and drones.
