This Thursday, July 30, President Gustavo Petro reacted to the sanctions imposed by the United States government against the judge who conducted the trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
Through his favorite platform, the Colombian president promoted the drafting of a lawsuit against the measures that have been made known from the US towards Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes.
Petro posted on his X account: “The sanctions imposed on Judge Alexandre de Moraes violate the American Convention on Human Rights.”

"I invite the best jurists in Latin America to draft the corresponding complaint. The United States, Colombia, and most of the nations of the Americas have committed to signing the American Convention on Human Rights. Does the U.S. government want to unilaterally violate it?" the head of state insisted.

Regarding the sanctions, these are economic in nature, based on the argument that the judicial official engaged in"authorizing arbitrary detentions" and "suppressing freedom of expression," according to a statement from the United States Department of the Treasury.
In addition, they arise within the framework of a US law known as Global Magnitsky, which by its nature punishes those who have committed or are linked to human rights violations or corruption in the world.
In turn, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement about the judge:"He is responsible for an oppressive campaign of censorship, arbitrary arrests that violate human rights and politicized trials, including that of former President Jair Bolsonaro (accused of an attempted coup)."
But the measures of President Donald Trump's government do not stop there, since the Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, said on his X account:"The United States will use all appropriate and effective diplomatic, political and legal instruments to protect the freedom of expression of Americans from malicious foreign actors who try to undermine it."
