UPDATE FBI holds press conference about case and suspect

The FBI press conference began with Utah Governor Spencer Cox stating,"We got him."

He said a member of Tyler Robinson's family contacted a family friend, who then contacted the sheriff with information that Robinson had confessed or suggested that he had committed the crime.

We recall that the suspect in the murder of American activist Charlie Kirk was identified as Tyler Robinson, aged 22.

A family member said Robinson had become"more involved in politics" in recent years.

According to the FBI, a family member recalled a recent incident in which Robinson came to dinner before September 10 and mentioned that Charlie Kirk was coming to Utah Valley University, talking about why he"didn't like him and his views."

A picture of Tyler Robinson was also featured.

Messages inscribed on cartridges

Robinson inscribed messages on the cartridges.

Spencer Cox, the governor of Utah, said that messages inscribed on cartridges were discovered with the rifle.

He said that the inscriptions on a fired cartridge were:"Notices. Bulges. OWO. What's this?" (note: a Romanian translation that would preserve the original meaning was not possible)

Inscriptions were also found on unused cartridges, Cox added. He says they read:

  • “Hey, fascist! Catch it!”
  • “O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao, ciao, ciao” (chorus from the famous Italian anti-fascist song)
  • “If you’re reading this, you’re gay. LMAO.”

Suspect Tyler Robinson's roommate showed investigators messages on Discord, a group chat app, in which Robinson talked about recovering a rifle, according to Utah Governor Spencer Cox.

The roommate"allowed investigators to take screenshots as each message was displayed by Robinson's roommate," Cox said in a press conference today.

"Their content included messages associated with the Tyler contact, mentioning the need to retrieve a rifle from a drop-off point, messages related to visual surveillance of the area where the rifle was left, and a message referring to the rifle being left wrapped in a towel," Cox detailed.

"The messages also refer to the engraving of the cartridges and a mention of a scope, as well as the fact that the rifle was unique. The messages from the Tyler contact also mentioned that he had changed his clothes," Cox noted.

UPDATE What Trump said in the interview in which he announced the capture of the assassin

The man now in police custody and being questioned in connection with the murder of Charlie Kirk was found with the help of someone who knew him, according to President Donald Trump.

"Basically, someone who was very close to him denounced him," Trump said Friday morning on "Fox and Friends."

"This is what happens when you have some good photos," the president said, referring to clearer photos of the suspect released by the FBI on Thursday.

Trump said the informant was"a person involved in law enforcement, but he was a person of faith."

The father of the arrested person was cooperating with investigators, Trump said.

The president admitted that he had only received a brief briefing before the interview and said:"I am always subject to correction, but I am only telling you what I hear."

UPDATE CNN sources: The suspect is being questioned

A person is in custody and being questioned in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to four sources familiar with the case, cited by CNN.

The person is still being questioned, according to sources.

The suspect reportedly surrendered at the urging of his father, after a person who recognized him approached him, Trump said in his Fox News interview.
