The regional director of Equipment, Transport and Logistics in Safi, Abdelrahim Tannas, stated this Monday that the rainfall recorded yesterday in the city center exceeded 60 millimeters in the space of three hours.
In a statement to the Maghreb Arab Press Agency (MAP), Tannas indicated that the rainfall in the city of Safi on Sunday varied in quantity between the city center, the south, and the north, specifying that the heaviest concentration of this precipitation was in the medina. He added that other parts of the city did not receive the same amount of rain, which explains the extent of the flooding in the city center, particularly in the Sidi Bouzid district.
Furthermore, the official indicated that the rainwater drainage channel at the Amoni cliff, as part of the Amoni cliff reinforcement project, was open and allowed the normal flow of water.
The death toll from the exceptional thunderstorms that struck the province Sunday night, and the resulting flash floods, has risen to 37. The efforts of public authorities, civil protection services, law enforcement, and all other responders are continuing, including ongoing search and rescue operations, as well as providing support and assistance to the affected population.
