The Utah Department of Public Safety and the FBI's Salt Lake City office posted photos on social media Thursday of a man they are calling a"person of special interest" in the investigation into the death of murdered Charlie Kirk.

"We are asking for the public's help in identifying this person of special interest in connection with the fatal shooting incident of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University," the post reads.

A map shows the location where Charlie Kirk was shot - in the central courtyard of Utah Valley University, which is surrounded by university buildings.

A university spokeswoman said Wednesday that the shot was believed to have been fired from the Losee Center building. Video shows a man running along the roof of the building moments after the shooting, about 400 feet from where Kirk spoke.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the man was connected to the attack. Drone video taken afterward shows police tape on the roof where the man was seen.

An audio recording from the dispatch center reviewed by CBS News describes a figure on the roof of a nearby building wearing a black tactical helmet, a black mask and carrying a long weapon.

Bow Mason of the Utah Department of Public Safety said Thursday that investigators believe the suspect fired shots from the roof, then jumped from the building and fled into a nearby neighborhood.

Law enforcement officials earlier said the weapon used in the shooting had been recovered and described it as a"powerful, bolt-action rifle."
