The Russian government plane has landed at Anchorage Airport, the capital of Alaska, and it is still unclear whether Vladimir Putin, whose arrival was scheduled for within the hour, is on board. At 9:30 p.m. (mainland Spanish time) this Friday, he will meet with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, to discuss a possible way to end the conflict in Ukraine. The Republican will greet the Kremlin leader upon disembarking, and the meeting is expected to last at least six hours. Moscow's envoy to the White House, Kirill Dmitriev, has described the mood of the Russian delegation already accompanying Putin as combative. For him, the meeting represents recognition on the global stage and proves the weakness of the International Criminal Court, which issued an arrest warrant against him in 2023. On Wednesday, Trump bowed to pressure from European diplomacy and assured that if the summit with Putin goes well, he will almost immediately sponsor a three-way meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, there are no high expectations that the meeting will result in substantial progress.

A meeting focused on the"search for peace"
After their closed-door meeting, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will appear on this stage to answer questions from the press. Behind them will be the phrase"searching for peace," which underscores the United States' interest in extracting a ceasefire from Russia in Ukraine. The phrase is also controversial, as the meeting breaks with one of the long-standing Western traditions of including Ukrainian authorities in any summit seeking to analyze the fate of Ukraine.

Putin is already traveling to Alaska after a stop in the Russian Far East
Vladimir Putin is already flying to Anchorage, the capital of Alaska. Before returning to US territory for the first time since 2007—except for visits to the UN in New York—Putin made a stop in Magadan, a city in the Far East of the country, almost 3,000 kilometers from his destination.
During his visit to Magadan, Putin laid flowers at the monument to US-Soviet cooperation during World War II, according to state media, and also visited a fish factory and an ice hockey team in the city.
The Kremlin leader is scheduled to land at 11:00 a.m. local time (9:00 p.m. in mainland Spain), a slight 30-minute advance compared to initial estimates.

Trump:"I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine, but to get them to sit at the table"
"I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine. I'm here to get them to sit at the table," Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Alaska. The US president said he wants a second meeting"very soon" that would also include Zelensky if his conversation with Putin goes well. Asked whether the US would offer security guarantees to kyiv in the event of a peace agreement with Moscow, Trump replied"maybe" and added that in that case, this support would be in conjunction with European nations, but"not in the form of NATO."
"I think something is going to come out of this meeting. I noticed he's bringing a lot of business people from Russia, and that's fine. I like it because they want to do business, but we won't do business until we get the worst of it resolved," the president stressed, before reiterating that if his Russian counterpart doesn't commit to peace in Ukraine, he could face more economic sanctions. Zelensky says Alaska summit should pave the way for a three-way dialogue
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared this Friday that the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin should pave the way for a three-way dialogue on peace in Ukraine.
"The fundamental thing is that this meeting opens a real path towards a just peace and a substantive debate between leaders in a trilateral format: Ukraine, the United States and Russia," Zelensky wrote in a message posted on his Facebook account. (EFE)
Macron and Zelensky plan to meet after Putin and Trump meeting
French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plan to meet in person after the crucial summit between the leaders of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, in Alaska this Friday.
“The President of the Republic held further talks with President Zelensky yesterday [Thursday] and today [Friday]. They agreed to meet at the most opportune and effective time, that is, after the meeting in Alaska and depending on the agenda,” Elysee Palace sources reported, without giving further details.
Neither Zelensky nor European representatives will take part in the talks in Alaska, where Trump’s objective is to achieve a ceasefire, although this is not very likely. On Wednesday, however, Ukraine's allies held a series of preparatory videoconferences, both among themselves and with the US government, in which Zelensky participated from Berlin to project an image of unity. During these conferences, the position was made clear that territorial concessions with Russia should not be discussed without Ukraine at the negotiating table and that peace must be achieved with guarantees of future security for the invaded country. Trump, as Macron later told the press, shared these positions. (EFE)

US President Donald Trump has already left the White House to board Air Force One and travel to Alaska to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, a meeting in which, among other things, they will discuss the war in Ukraine. Before leaving, Trump sent a message on his social network, TruthSocial, that read: “HIGH EXPECTATIONS!” Posted at: 13:58 CEST 08/15/2025El País
Putin travels accompanied by his foreign, defense, and finance ministers
The Kremlin has also announced the composition of the delegation that will accompany Vladimir Putin to Alaska to meet with Donald Trump. The delegation includes Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and, as is customary when it comes to Ukrainian affairs, presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov. Also traveling are Defense Minister Andrei Belusov; Finance Minister Anton Siluanov; and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev.
The inclusion of Belusov and Siluanov indicates that the meeting's agenda will not be limited to the war in Ukraine, but will also address strategic security issues and the issue of sanctions imposed by Washington on Moscow.

The presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, will hold a summit this Friday in Anchorage, in the US state of Alaska, which is being hailed as historic. The two will discuss the future of the war in Ukraine in a meeting that will not be attended by either the country's leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, or the European allies. The US president has stated that he believes his interlocutor"is ready" for a peace agreement. But in kyiv, and in Europe, there are fears that the two leaders will end up reaching an agreement that could doom Ukraine. Below we explain the key points of this summit.

The eyes of the world—especially those of Ukraine and Europe—will be fixed this Friday on the summit that the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, will hold at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, outside Anchorage, on the coast of Alaska. The White House, eager to lower expectations, has described the meeting as a mere contact, in which decisions will be left for later, at a possible summit between Putin and the Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky. But the European governments and kyiv, absent from the tête-à-tête, are holding their breath. The fear is that, despite the promises from Washington, the Russian president will end up winning the American over. Let the conversation not remain a mere exchange of impressions and lay the foundations for a dark future for Ukraine, without Ukraine.
