Potential Ukraine Deal

A meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin is scheduled for the end of next week, a White House official said.

According to him, the meeting location is still under discussion, with the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Hungary and Rome, Italy, being mentioned.

A TASS source previously said that the Italian capital was out of the question.

The US and Russia agreed this week to hold a meeting at the level of the presidents of both countries in the coming days.

Moscow announced the agreement in principle on Thursday after special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Putin in the Kremlin on Wednesday. Trump subsequently said he would likely meet Putin in person soon.

Bloomberg reported on Thursday that US and Russian officials are trying to reach an agreement ahead of the summit to stop the fighting in Ukraine, which would allow Moscow to retain Ukrainian territories occupied during the invasion.

According to Bloomberg, Putin is demanding control over Ukraine's Donbass and the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014. He also wants to retain control over the occupied parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions.

In exchange, the Russian offensive along the current front line in these regions would be halted. According to Bloomberg, taking Donbas would require Ukraine to withdraw troops from those parts of Luhansk and Donetsk regions that Moscow does not yet control.

The White House called the Bloomberg report"speculation," according to Reuters. Neither a Kremlin spokesman nor Kiev immediately commented on the report.

A White House source told Sky News that the Russians have provided a list of demands for a possible ceasefire in Ukraine and Washington is now trying to win the agreement of Ukrainians and European allies. Ukrainians have long said they will not give up territory illegally annexed by Russia. (TASR)
