"There is no doubt that this provocation is incomparably more dangerous for Poland than previous ones," said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

More than a dozen Russian drones were shot down by the Polish armed forces over Poland, marking the first time a NATO member country has directly attacked Russian combat assets in its airspace since the escalation of the war in Ukraine in 2022.

Tusk announced that Poland had requested the application of Article 4 of the NATO Treaty. This passage allows a member state to bring a matter to the North Atlantic Council, NATO's primary policy-making body. Consultations are then held to determine whether a member state's territorial integrity, political independence or security has been threatened.

Tusk said he expects great support in these consultations.

"This is not just a war for Ukrainians. This is a confrontation that Russia has declared against the entire free world," he said. (BBC)
