LONDON. Slovak tennis player Mia Pohánková triumphed in the junior women's singles at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon.
In Saturday's final, she defeated sixth-seeded American Juliete Parejo 6-3, 6-1. The match lasted an hour and 10 minutes.
Sixteen-year-old Pohánková won her first title in the Big Four events and followed up on last year's triumph by compatriot Renáta Jamrichová on the grass of the All England Club.
The charge of coach Róbert Gašparetz became the fourth Slovak champion in the Grand Slam junior singles in the era of independence.
She imitated Jamrichová, who has two trophies in her collection and also triumphed at the Australian Open last year.
Tereza Mihalíková (Australian Open 2015), Kristína Kučová (US Open 2007) have one title each. Among juniors, Martin Kližan won in 2006 at Roland Garros.
Pohankova had a tough start to the final match, losing serve in the third game and Parejova breaking the serve. However, the young Slovak improved her performance after that.
She won five games in a row, broke the American twice, and took advantage of the first set point in the ninth game. The second set was clearly in Pohánková's hands. She quickly built a 3-0 lead.
She lost serve in the fourth game, but responded by winning three more games. In the seventh, she immediately used her first match point.
The Slovak lost only one set during the entire tournament, which was won by Nauhany Vitoria Leme Da Silva from Brazil in the round of 16.
Pohánková's success was highly praised by Igor Moška, general secretary of the Slovak Tennis Association.
"It's incredible what Mia achieved today, I'm thrilled with it. She performed fantastically at Wimbledon, beating strong players and winning the most valuable trophy in junior tennis."
It's amazing how confidently she performed in the final rounds of the tournament, in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
