Party Leadership Resolution and Next Steps

Carlos Mazón is deliberating in Alicante, his hometown, with his closest team, a very small working group, on what to do in the coming hours as head of the Valencian Community. He has been secluded there since Friday. Three options are currently on the table. The first: resign, which would imply a new investiture session to elect a new president. This option absolutely requires the support of Vox to pass, as the People's Party (PP) does not have an absolute majority. If this were to happen, the PP would remain in power until 2027, and if this is the chosen option, the PP must nominate a regional deputy to preside over the Generalitat. If that deputy is not elected in the second round, it would force the region to hold regional elections two months after this investiture session.

The second option Mazón's team is working on is an early election next year with a consensus candidate. In the meantime, however, the regional leader would continue as president of the Valencian Community. Who would these candidates be? The Valencian PP has been in turmoil since last Thursday, when the regional leader announced a period of reflection on his political future. Nervousness reigns in all the WhatsApp groups.

In fact, the party's three main territorial leaders in the Community agreed this Friday, during a lunch, that the consensus candidate, in the event that Mazón were to leave, would be the current president of the Valencia Provincial Council, Vicente Mompó, as reported by EL PAÍS this Saturday.

However, Genoa prefers the current mayor of Valencia, María José Catalá. In any case, the national leadership will have the final say.

And the third option on the table for the Valencian president is resistance. To resist until the end of the legislature in 2027, but with the public announcement that he will no longer be the candidate in that year's elections. This is the possibility his closest team is pressuring him with. However, according to those who have spoken with the president in recent hours, the feeling of weariness and the end of an era is evident, especially after the state funeral last Wednesday, where he received numerous insults from the victims of the DANA storm, which has prompted this reflection with his team.

During these crucial hours of Sunday, Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the Valencian leader spoke around 8:00 p.m. The conversation, of which few details have emerged, concluded with an announcement: Mazón will explain the decision to the media tomorrow.

Added to this is the Valencian PP's schedule this week, with three days marked in red. This Monday, journalist Maribel Vilaplana, who had lunch with Mazón for almost four hours at the El Ventorro restaurant on the afternoon of October 29, 2024, will testify before the judge investigating the DANA tragedy.

On Tuesday, the Valencian president will hold his cabinet meeting. Wednesday was the date chosen for his third cabinet reshuffle in a year, where, if it takes place, few changes are expected, according to sources. The departure of the second vice president and head of reconstruction, retired military officer Francisco Gan Pampols, will, in principle, mean that the current Minister of Infrastructure, Vicente Martínez Mus, will assume Pampols' responsibilities. However, both Tuesday's cabinet meeting and Wednesday's reshuffle could fall apart in the coming hours. Meanwhile, the media have been crowding the Palau de la Generalitat this Sunday afternoon. The Palau, however, is closed. For now.
