The World's Current Take

In 2023, the Saeima ratified the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, more commonly known as the Istanbul Convention. At the beginning of the pre-election season, discussions about the convention suddenly resumed - opposition parties see it as a"genderist" ideology. On October 23, opposition parties, with the votes of the Green and Farmers' Union (ZZS), conceptually supported the draft law on Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, although ZZS was one of the parties that voted for the adoption of the convention two years ago. The only parties that support the Istanbul Convention are"New Unity" and "Progressives".

Before the vote, ambassadors from several European countries indicated in a joint letter that they were concerned about the signal Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention would send"at a time when this issue is being selfishly exploited by hostile governments."
