MADRID. At least 21 people were injured, three seriously, in a gas explosion in Madrid, local rescue services said.
The explosion occurred around 3:00 p.m. local time in the Puente de Vallecas neighborhood and hit the Mis Tesoros restaurant and an adjacent residential building, the Spanish daily El País reports.
Firefighters were on the scene clearing away debris, Madrid's emergency services announced in a post on the X platform, where they also shared images of the partially collapsed ceiling of the restaurant and bricks scattered on the ground.
The door of the business was torn off its hinges and shards of glass were scattered across the road as rescue workers carried away one of the injured on a stretcher.
Emergency services said 21 people were treated by rescue workers, with three in a"serious" condition and two in a "potentially serious" condition. They added that authorities had also deployed search dogs and drones in the response.
It is not yet clear where exactly and for what reason the explosion occurred.
