Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Two suspects in the theft of several French crown jewels from the Louvre Museum were arrested near Paris on Saturday. One of them was apprehended before boarding a plane at Charles de Gaulle Airport, France.
According to a report by the Le Parisien newspaper, which first reported the case, two men in their 30s from the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis were arrested on Saturday night.
Both were known to French police, and one was reportedly planning to travel to Algeria. Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau did not provide details on the exact number of people arrested or further information regarding their identities.
In a statement, Beccuau expressed regret over the leak of information regarding the suspects' arrests, stating that this could potentially hinder the investigation.
"This disclosure will only hinder the investigative efforts of approximately 100 investigators who have been mobilized to search for the stolen jewelry and all the perpetrators. It is too early to provide specific details," Beccuau said, as quoted by Reuters on Sunday (October 26, 2025).
For your information, the thieves managed to make off with eight precious jewels worth around US$ 102 million from the Louvre Museum collection on October 19.
The attack exposed security gaps at the world's most visited museum, after the perpetrators used a crane to break a window on the upper floor during operating hours. They then fled on a motorcycle.
Meanwhile, news of the robbery reverberated around the world and sparked contemplation in France, with many considering it a national humiliation.
