Opposition Criticism and Crisis Assessment

The national government transferred $12.5 billion to four provinces as a gesture of rapprochement with allied governors, amid a context where Congress will debate important presidential vetoes. The beneficiary provinces are Chaco, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, and Misiones, with funds earmarked for various emergencies.

In a strategic move ahead of a crucial parliamentary session, the government decided to transfer $12.5 billion to four provinces through National Treasury Contributions (ATN).

The measure, implemented on Friday, comes within the context of President Javier Milei's veto of a law modifying the distribution of funds among the provinces. The beneficiary jurisdictions were Chaco, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, and Misiones.

Chaco Governor Leandro Zdero received $2.5 billion for agricultural emergencies. Entre Ríos, under Rogelio Frigerio, received $3 billion due to a financial imbalance. Misiones, under Hugo Passalacqua, received $4 billion to address the water emergency, while Santa Fe, headed by Maximiliano Pullaro, received $3 billion for the climate emergency.

The transfer of funds comes amid political tensions, with Congress preparing to discuss important presidential vetoes.

It's worth noting that other provinces have also received ATN so far this year. Neuquén leads with $15 billion, followed by Salta with $13 billion, and Tucumán with $12 billion, all earmarked for climate and social-health emergencies.

Political strategy

This move by the Executive Branch seeks to bridge the gap with the governors during a key week in Congress.

The talks, led by Guillermo Francos and Lisandro Catalán, aim to secure support amid a challenging scenario.

Although the government is struggling to secure the votes needed to uphold its vetoes, the Casa Rosada remains hopeful of reaching an agreement.
