It is known that 18 people have been injured.

The accident occurred on Wednesday evening at around 6:05 p.m. Although the exact cause of the accident is not yet known, local newspaper"Observador" reported that the accident was caused by a broken cable on the funicular route, which caused the cable car to derail and crash into a nearby building.

There were 43 passengers on the train at the time of the accident, the BBC reports.

The Gloria Funicular is one of Lisbon's most popular attractions. The funicular route was opened in 1885.
