The conflict between Israel and Iran has spilled over to the seas. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu blamed Iran for the explosion on an Israeli-owned vehicle carrier in February off the coast of Oman. Iran blamed Israel in March for the explosion of a small drone on the deck of an Iranian container ship in the SE Mediterranean, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished by the crew.

2022

In May, two men riding a large motorcycle shot and killed Colonel Sayyad Khodayi, an officer in the Revolutionary Guards. Israeli officials said Khodayi was the commander of a secret unit responsible for assassinations and kidnappings. Israel confirmed in talks with the US government its role in Khodayi's killing.

In May, aeronautical engineer Ayoub Entezari, a member of an army research team, and geologist Kamran Agamolayi died of food poisoning. Tehran claimed that the two men were poisoned by Israel, with Tel Aviv declining to comment.

2023

Iran has denied any involvement in Hamas attacks. In solidarity with Gaza, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthis have carried out attacks against Israel. In December, Iran accused Israel of assassinating a senior Iranian official in Syria.

2024

In April, an Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus killed three senior Iranian officials. A few weeks later, Tehran launched a 300-drone and missile attack on Israel. Tel Aviv responded by attacking Iranian anti-aircraft cover over nuclear facilities.

In July, Israel assassinates Hamas' political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran.

In September, coordinated explosions of Israeli-rigged bombs kill Hezbollah operatives.

In September, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah is assassinated in Beirut.

In October, Iran launches 180 ballistic missiles against Israel.
