European Stance on Ukraine

Is Trump so eager for peace that he is willing to make a deal on Putin's terms?

NEWS ANALYSIS: US President Donald Trump has been threatening Russian President Vladimir Putin with tough measures for several weeks if the Russians do not become more peace-minded. Last week, things completely changed.

Trump claimed that great progress had been made. Now there was a very good chance of reaching an agreement on Russia's war against Ukraine. On Friday, the two presidents will meet in Alaska.

"There will be an exchange of territories for the good of both parties," Trump said.

Has Putin managed to win over Trump again? For years, the American has shown that he admires the Russian leader. In Ukraine and Europe, fears grew that the two presidents would make a deal on Putin's terms. And that Trump would then try to squeeze them into agreeing to it.

Perhaps the fear is unfounded. There is much evidence that the US peace broker, Steve Witkoff, has tripped over his own feet in his eagerness to find a solution.
