The agreement, which will be coordinated by NATO, includes, among other things, Ukraine's highly desired Patriot air defense system.

Trump announced this at a joint press conference with NATO chief Mark Rutte on Monday.

– This is the first wave, and there will be more to come, says Rutte, adding that the deliveries should make Russian President Vladimir Putin reconsider peace negotiations.

Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide believes the arms agreement between the US and NATO sends a clear signal to Russia:

– This is an important time to step up support. An intensified effort, coordinated through NATO, will make support more targeted and sustainable and send a clear signal to the Kremlin that we stand united, Eide writes in a press release.

The United States gives Russia a new 50-day deadline to reach an agreement and stop the war against Ukraine.

If not, Trump warns, a 100 percent tariff will be imposed on Russia. According to the White House, the US will also sanction countries that buy oil from Russia.

Disappointed with Putin

For months, Trump has denied that Russia started the war against Ukraine and accused Volodymyr Zelensky of not wanting to stop the war.

But after Putin and Trump spoke on the phone on July 4, the tone has changed. Trump has on several occasions expressed himself highly critical of the Russian president.

“The Russian president is killing a lot of people,” Trump said during a cabinet meeting in Washington, D.C., last week.

– He is very straightforward all the time, but it turns out to be pointless.

During the White House press conference on Monday, Trump reiterated that he is very disappointed with Putin:

– I felt like we had an agreement on Ukraine about four times.

Trump told NBC News on Thursday that he would make a big statement about Russia on Monday. During the interview, the US president spoke about future arms deliveries to Ukraine:

"We're sending weapons to NATO, and NATO is paying for these weapons, 100 percent. NATO is going to give these weapons to Ukraine," Trump said.

Sources to CNN believe the United States will send short-range and medium-range missiles to NATO countries, which will in turn be transferred to Ukraine.
