US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly discussed Trump’s desire for a ceasefire, the situation in Iran, and potential trade between the two countries during a phone call on Thursday, according to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov.

Trump had not commented on the call at the time of publication.

Ushakov said Trump “raised the issue of ending military actions in Ukraine as soon as possible,” according to Russian media Meduza.

Putin reportedly told Trump that Moscow was prepared to continue the negotiation process with Ukraine, but said that Moscow “will not back down from its goals to eliminate the causes of the conflict.”

Putin has previously claimed that NATO’s eastward expansion is the root cause of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and has proposed conditions for a ceasefire – which included the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops – that effectively amount to Kyiv’s capitulation.

Based on Ushakov’s statement, the two did not discuss the next round of talks between Kyiv and Moscow, or the supply of American weapons to Ukraine.

The last call between the two was held on June 14, where they discussed Israel’s attacks on Iran.

Thursday’s phone call marks the sixth conversation this year between Trump and Putin.

Trump is expected to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday to discuss the war in Ukraine and the recent US decision to suspend the delivery of certain critical weapons, including precision-guided artillery shells and Patriot air defense missiles.

Before the call between Trump and Putin, Zelensky reiterated Kyiv’s support for the US ceasefire proposal while commenting on the then-upcoming call.

“I’m not sure they have many ideas in common, as they are very different people. But if we are talking about Ukraine, we have always supported the idea of an unconditional ceasefire proposed by President Trump.”
