According to reports, four people were transferred to the hospital.

Authorities said a suspect has been identified, but his name has not been released, Fox reported.

Officials announced on Facebook that the base commander, Col. William"Gabe" Weaver, had ordered a lockdown of the base and Wright and Evans Air Force Base.

"Immediately lock down your facilities, stay inside, lock all doors and windows. Keep your phone lines open and report to your superiors," stated  are military officials on the Facebook page of the Fort Stewart base.

The base was placed under lockdown measures at 11:04 a.m. local time, and it was confirmed that there was an incident with an armed assailant in the area of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team.

Lt. Col. Angel Tomko told AP that they are currently assessing the situation, but that the attacker is present at the scene.

Members of the police are present at the scene, and all gates of the base are currently closed.

As a precaution, the nearby"Baton Gwinnett" and "Joseph Martin" elementary schools, as well as the"Snelson Golden" high school, were locked down.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said on Platform X that his thoughts are with the families of those affected  a tragic incident at the base.

U.S. Congressman Buddy Carter, whose district includes Fort Stewart, said in an online post that he was monitoring the situation regarding the shooting.
