The conversation between Trump and Putin took place just a day before the US president's meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, at which the latter is likely to request the supply of Tomahawk missiles.

Trump has grown increasingly dissatisfied with Putin in recent months as he rejects his calls for a ceasefire and continues to step up attacks on targets in Ukraine. He has called on allies to bolster their air defenses and pressure Russia.
