Elon Musk said he has started another political party.

The Tesla CEO announced on X on Jul. 5 that he has formed the America Party.

However, no paperwork to the Federal Election Commission has been filed that showed the formation of a new “America Party” political entity, Wall Street Journal reported.

Asked people to vote

Musk, 54, had posted a poll on X with the message, asking:"Should we create the America Party?"

He wrote that Independence Day was "the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system".

In response, 65.4 per cent of more than 1.2 million votes indicated"Yes".

Following this poll, he followed up with another X post on Saturday announcing the launch of the America Party.

"By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!" he wrote.

"When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."

Third party spoilers

A third-party candidate can act as spoilers and pull votes away from the two main parties even though its candidates have never become president, WSJ added.

Musk also reshared a meme on Saturday of an image of a two-headed snake.

The caption read:"End the Uniparty."

In response, Musk wrote:"Yes."

Fallout

Musk was the former adviser to United States president Donald Trump.

Previously, as the legislation for the"Big, Beautiful Bill", Trump's signature megabill, made its way through the Senate, Musk threatened to back a primary challenge against those who voted in support of the legislation.

“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!,” Musk wrote on X on Jun. 30.

“And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

The bill makes many of Trump's 2017 tax cuts permanent.

Musk has repeatedly slammed the bill.

“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” he wrote in a post on X before declaring the formation of a new party.

“Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”

Trump retaliated

Trump has since retaliated.

"I think it's ridiculous to start a third party," he said, speaking to reporters on Jul. 6 before boarding Air Force One.

"It's always been a two-party system and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion."

Trump also posted on his Truth Social platform on Sunday: "I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails,' essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks."

The post took aim at Musk's push for an "Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate", saying it would have"forced everyone to buy an electric car in a short period of time".

Trump's bill ended tax breaks for EVs

The president's tax and spending plan, which he signed into law on Jul. 4, ended tax breaks for electric vehicles.

Trump previously retaliated by suggesting he could unleash the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and possibly end government contracts for Musk’s companies.

Musk founded and helped launch DOGE while in the White House.

Trump added that he had from the start opposed Musk's proposal for an EV mandate.

The legislation includes increased spending for border security, defence and energy production.

Cuts to healthcare and food-support programmes had to be enacted.
