Berlin/Washington – US President Donald Trump has invited leading European politicians to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, according to the New York Times.

As BILD learned from government sources, the governments of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron intend to coordinate and decide together on Sunday whether and who will travel to the USA. However, this requires an official invitation from the USA.

According to BILD, Trump has offered Zelensky the opportunity to bring European politicians to the US. There is no official invitation. The Europeans are determined to avoid a purely show-off meeting.

The meeting between Trump and Zelensky follows the summit between Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. The US government subsequently spoke of"great progress."

Earlier on Saturday, Merz declared that he drew a positive conclusion from the Alaska summit."This summit can be a success on the path to peace in Ukraine, provided the right steps are taken now," the CDU chairman told broadcasters RTL/ntv.

He referred to the planned meeting between Trump and Zelensky. This would be followed later by a trilateral meeting with Putin, but the time and place for this were still open.

"This is a good path, but it will still be arduous. And I think we should not underestimate that," Merz said.
