Both teams have the same number of 12 points before the climax of the group stage, but the Germans have a better score (+7:+4).

Slovakia - Northern Ireland 1:0 (0:0)

  • Goal: 90.+1 Bobček. Referees: Kovács – Marica, Tunyogi (all Romanian), ŽK: Gyömbér – Ballard, Hume, ČK: 90.+9 Ballard (after 2. ŽK)
  • Slovakia: Dúbravka – Gyömbér (88. Bobček), Škriniar, Obert, Hancko – Bero, Lobotka, Rigo (84. Bénes) – Ďuriš (69. L. Sauer), Strelec (88. Boženík), Haraslín (84. Tupta)
  • Northern Ireland: Peacock-Farrell – McConville, Ballar, McNair (73. Magennis) – Hume (90.+7 Brown), Bradley, Saville, Devenny – Lyons, Price – Charles (46. Reid, 79. Donley)

In the opening quarter, both teams were careful on defense and the packed stands saw no scoring opportunities. In the 17th minute, Ballard ran onto Devenny's cross and headed the ball just wide of the left post.

The Slovaks responded with a counterattack on the left side, when Hancko sent Strelc, who after escaping hit the near post of the guests' goal. The ball bounced to Ďuriš, who did not have time to direct it. The teams were also attentive in the defense in the remaining minutes of the first half and crowded the space around the penalty area.

After half an hour of play, Charles got the ball with a header, but Dúbravka was alert. The Slovak team had several periods of easy turnovers at the end of the first half, which led to counterattacks by the visitors. In the 38th minute, Charles narrowly missed the ball after a cross.

In the 55th minute, the Slovaks were already celebrating when Haraslín sent a low shot from a free kick into the goal, but the goal was disallowed due to Škriniar being offside. Ten minutes later, Haraslín again set up a free kick, this time from a sharper angle.

He crossed to Strelec, who directed the ball into the goal, but the goal was again off target, this time due to Strelec's hand. Shortly after that, the Slovaks got into an offensive action, Hancko took responsibility, who completed the attack, but shot over the goal.

Hancko also had a promising opportunity in the 80th minute after a collision with Haraslín, but from inside the penalty area he only sent the ball directly to goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell.

The decision came in the 91st minute and the cooperation of two substitutes. Bénes sent the ball into the"small box" from a direct kick and the uncovered Bobček got it into the goal.

Votes after the match /source: STVR/:

Stanislav Lobotka, midfielder of the Slovak Republic: "I'm definitely tired, but happy. It was a tough match, the opponent too, the pitch was hard, soft. We tried to create and do everything we said we would. It's a shame that two goals weren't recognised and we didn't close it out sooner."

I'm glad we managed to win. It's great for Bobček, 'Boban' is a great guy, he sent us to the play-offs, he proved that he belongs in the national team. I'm glad we managed it in the end."

Lukáš Haraslín, winger of the Slovak Republic: "Of course, we are very excited. We knew where we could get with a victory. Hats off to the guys and the fans, how they pushed us for 90 minutes.

I still get chills now, how we pushed it in the end. With the disallowed goals, I didn't know what was going to happen at first, it's a shame for us that they didn't, we could have ended the game earlier. A goal in extra time tastes even better."

Tomáš Bobček, striker of the Slovak Republic and author of the only goal: "I dreamed of a national team debut, but not one so successful. I couldn't have dreamed of a better start - we won and I scored the winning goal. To be honest, after the goal I didn't know if I was dreaming or if it was reality.

I tried to find a place after the corner and when it went in, I started to enjoy it. I feel very good in Poland now, I like it there, goals help me with my self-confidence, even today I believed that if I get even just a few minutes on the pitch, that one chance might come."

Milan Škriniar, captain of the Slovak Republic: "We are really happy that we managed it. We went for the victory from the first minute. We showed quality and fighting spirit on the pitch. Even after the disallowed goals, we believed that we could break it and in the end we succeeded."

"In addition, we kept a clean sheet at the back, which is fantastic. We are happy that 'Bobo' scored and decided the game, he is also very happy about it. We are certain of a play-off, we are happy about that, but why not try for a surprise now? We will do everything to advance from first place, even if it will be difficult in Germany."
