In the Mexican state of Michoacan, gunmen shot and killed the mayor of the city of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, during a public event dedicated to the Day of the Dead.

This is reported by Ukrinform with reference to  CBS News.

Mexico's National Public Security Agency said Manso died in an attack in the city center. The agency said two people involved in the incident had been arrested and one of the attackers had died.

Videos posted on social media show people fleeing the scene of the shooting in panic.

The mayor, who took office in September 2024, is known for sometimes personally going out with security patrols wearing bulletproof vests. In June, he posted a video of one of those patrols on social media, calling on federal authorities to do more to combat violent crime.

Michoacan has suffered for many years from violence perpetrated by powerful drug cartels that operate in this agricultural region and extort money from farmers.

As Ukrinform reported, on October 28, at least 60 people died in a large-scale raid by Brazilian security forces in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
