Canada says it is “evaluating” bilateral relations with Israel following an"unacceptable" Israeli airstrike on Qatar’s capital, Doha.

Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Ottawa considered Israel’s attack on Doha unacceptable, especially given Qatari efforts to facilitate peace talks between Hamas and Tel Aviv.

“We are evaluating our relationship with Israel,” Anand told reporters on Wednesday. “There were deaths on the ground at a time when Qatar was trying to facilitate peace."

When asked if Canada was considering sanctions, Anand said the government “will continue to evaluate our next steps.”

Israel’s military said Tuesday that it conducted a “precise strike targeting the senior leadership” of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in Doha.

Qatar immediately condemned Israel’s airstrikes as a blatant violation of its sovereignty, saying the “cowardly” attack targeted residential buildings that housed members of Hamas’s political bureau.

Hamas later said the strike killed five members but failed to assassinate the negotiating delegation, the intended target of the strikes.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has since come under growing condemnation at home and abroad for putting ceasefire negotiations at risk.
