JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Twice the National Police Chief, General Pol Listyo Sigit Prabowo, apologized for the death of the online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver, Affan Kurniawan (21), after being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle (rantis) during the dispersal of a mass demonstration in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta on March 28 2025, evening.
The four-star general's hug to the family also could not bring back Affan, who is now buried in Karet Bivak TPU.
The National Police Chief first apologized through a written statement after widespread news that Affan died after being run over by a Brimob armored vehicle.
Then, Listyo Sigit delivered the second apology directly when he visited Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), where Affan's body was laid out on Friday, August 29, 2025, in the early hours of the morning.
When visiting RSCM, the Chief of Police was caught on camera hugging Affan's family.
"First of all, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the late Affan and, of course, to his entire family. Earlier, we offered our condolences and apologized to our institution for the tragedy," said Listyo Sigit.
Promise to Take Firm Action
To the family and the Indonesian people, the Chief of Police then ensured that the institution he leads would take firm action against the perpetrators who ran over Affan with a vehicle.
"And of course, we will follow up on the incident. I think the Head of the Propam Division has already conveyed this, and I assure you, it will be followed up. And of course, I also apologize to the entire motorcycle taxi (ojol) family and the public for the tragedy and incident that occurred," he said.
Listyo Sigit also emphasized that evaluations within the National Police will continue to be carried out to prevent similar incidents from recurring.
"There will always be a process. What is clear is that we will continue to evaluate," he said when asked about the deaths of citizens due to police action since 2019.
Ethical Process Against Perpetrators
Currently, there are seven Brimob members who have been arrested and placed in special placement (patsus) under the auspices of the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the Indonesian National Police.
The seven Brimob members include Kompol C, Aipda M, Briptu D, Bripda M, Baraka Y, Baraka J, and Bripka R.
The Indonesian National Police's Propam has named them as suspected ethical violators in this case or the equivalent of suspects in the general criminal realm.
The investigation of the seven is still ongoing, but Propam stated that they are strongly suspected of having committed ethical violations as police officers.
However, because the investigation is still ongoing, Propam has not yet announced the sanctions received by the seven Brimob members.
