Vote results for the 32nd Prime Minister

On September 5, 2025, the House of Representatives meeting had an important agenda: voting to select the 32nd Prime Minister of Thailand. This followed the Constitutional Court ruling by a majority of 6:3 that Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister, was removed from her position as a minister on August 29, 2025, effective from the date she was ordered to cease performing her duties, July 1, 2025. This resulted in the entire Cabinet being removed and a new Prime Minister had to be elected.

At 11:33 a.m., Mr. Chaiya Promma, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, presided over the meeting and explained the voting procedures for the 32nd Prime Minister. He called out the names of the House of Representatives (MPs) in alphabetical order and asked them to vote for approval, disapproval, and abstention. The current number of MPs in this House is 493. To be elected Prime Minister, one must receive more than half of the House votes, which is 247 votes or more. This agenda item arose after there was debate and a vote to postpone the urgent motion regarding the Prime Minister voting, item 8, for consideration first. The vote was 313 to 142.

At 12:04 PM, the chairperson allowed both parties to nominate a candidate for the 32nd Prime Minister. Chaichanok Chidchob, MP for Buriram and Secretary-General of the Bhumjaithai Party, nominated Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, as the party’s sole Prime Ministerial candidate. Meanwhile, Sorawong Thienthong, MP for Sa Kaeo and Secretary-General of the Pheu Thai Party, nominated Chaikasem Nitisiri, Pheu Thai Party’s final Prime Ministerial candidate. Members were then given an opportunity to debate before voting on the candidate for Prime Minister. After the debate in support of Chaikasem and Anutin concluded, the chairperson ushered in the Prime Ministerial vote. The first vote began at 3:01 PM, with the roll call of the 493 names openly cast. The candidate for Prime Minister must secure at least 247 votes.

Most recently at 3:51 PM, the House of Representatives approved Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul with over 247 votes, so Mr. Anutin was considered to be the 32nd Prime Minister. The next step is to wait for the royal appointment to the position of Prime Minister.
