Background and Context Reports

Activist and influencer Charlie Kirk, an ally of Donald Trump and leader of the main conservative youth organization in the United States, was shot Wednesday while giving a talk at the University of Utah. The activist died minutes later in the hospital where he had been taken. The moment was captured on video by several attendees at the event, who used their cell phones to record the instant the bullet struck the executive director of the Turning Point youth organization in the neck.

According to reports, the incident occurred while Kirk was giving a speech from a tent during one of his regular debates with a group of students. It is estimated that nearly 2,000 people were listening.

Some users recorded the moment when, alerted by the shot, the attendees ran away from the place.

Moments before the attack and before taking the stage where he would give his speech, the activist had interacted with the audience and given away event caps. A user who was in the front row also recorded the moment.

Kirk was taken to Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, where he arrived in serious condition. Donald Trump himself confirmed his death in a message on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, police arrested a man after the attack. Although his name was not released, images of the arrest quickly spread on social media.

In one of the videos, officers can be seen holding the man, dressed in a blue shirt, white underwear, and his pants down, on the ground. He says,"I have the right to remain silent."

In another video, he was seen being taken away, first walking, and then, after tripping, being picked up and carried by several officers.

According to The New York Times, the arrested man was not the shooter. Furthermore, the shot was reportedly fired from a building located 200 meters from where Charlie Kirk was standing. Authorities later confirmed that they had arrested"the man behind today's horrific shooting that claimed the life of Charlie Kirk," who is in custody.
