Erling Haaland scored his 34th goal for club and country this season to give Manchester City a 2-1 win at Real Madrid on Wednesday. It was a second successive home defeat for Real following their 2-0 reverse against Celta Vigo at the weekend and heaped more pressure on coach Xabi Alonso, whose side have won just two of their last eight in all competitions.

For Haaland, though, this was a 21st goal in 21 City games this season and a 51st in 50 Champions League starts, while Nico O'Reilly scored his first goal in the competition.

"(The) game was a bit chaotic, we couldn't really control it. We get the win in the end, super happy," Haaland told TNT Sports, pointing to how important it was to bounce back from their home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last time out.

"Two more games left. We need to finish strong and hopefully we can be in the first eight because then we're through."

Rodrygo gave Real, who were missing Kylian Mbappe, the lead just before the half-hour mark with a crisp shot across Gianluigi Donnarumma into the far corner.

But academy product O'Reilly equalised just seven minutes later, reacting quickest to prod home the loose ball from inside the six-yard box after Thibaut Courtois had saved Josko Gvardiol's header.

And Haaland was able to fire City in front from the penalty spot on 43 minutes after VAR intervened to punish Antonio Rudiger for wrestling the Norwegian forward to the ground to prevent him reaching a cross.

It could have been worse for Real but Courtois redeemed himself somewhat for flapping at Gvardiol's header with a crucial double save to deny Haaland and Rayan Cherki in quick succession as the half drew to a close.

It was a breathless end-to-end second half and Jude Bellingham could have done better than chip over the bar with only Donnarumma to beat, while Courtois made a fingertip save to deny Jeremy Doku.

Vinicius Jr. had a late chance to equalise but skied his volley after Donnarumma had come for and missed an inswinging corner.

Substitute Endrick also clipped the top of the bar with a header as Real pushed for a late equaliser.

"It's a difficult moment for us and for (Alonso) as well. Things aren't going well... we wanted to show people we're together with the coach," said Rodrygo, who hugged his under-fire boss on the side of the pitch after the match.

Arsenal crush Club Brugge

Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli scored wonder goals as Arsenal outclassed Club Brugge 3-0 on Wednesday to make it six wins out of six in the Champions League, virtually guaranteeing automatic qualification to the last 16.

Former Chelsea winger Madueke unleashed a thunderbolt from distance to give the table-topping Gunners a deserved first-half lead and headed in from point-blank range at the start of the second half.

Brazil forward Martinelli then put the result beyond doubt, cutting in from the left and hitting a curling right-footed effort home from just outside the box -- competing with Madueke for goal of the night.

The crushing win leaves injury-hit Arsenal top of the league phase of the Champions League  with 18 points, with a top-eight finish all but assured with two games remaining.

Finishing in the top eight means automatic qualification for the last 16, avoiding the need for a risky play-off.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta praised his team's performance, particularly in light of their lengthy list of missing players.

"To play in the Champions League and to win away from home and especially when we have that many players out, it makes the task bigger but I talked to the boys," he told TNT Sports.

"It was about showing how much we wanted it, the resilience and how we prepared and I think there were some great examples, for example Christian Norgaard, which is a player that probably prepares the best out of all of them."

Superb Simon guides Athletic to PSG draw

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon put in a superb performance to help Athletic Bilbao to a 0-0 draw with Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Simon, 28, made a string of saves in the Basque Country to keep the hosts' hopes of a play-off spot alive.

The Parisians were frustrated by Athletic and Simon but move up to third in the table with two rounds of the league phase to play, including January 20's trip to Sporting Lisbon and hosting Newcastle eight days later, and are in line to reach the last 16.

"We always want victory," Vitinha told Canal+.

"The problem is that in a game like that, in the Champions League, when you don't score it becomes difficult.

"We wasted too many chances, it can happen but it's the difference in that type of match," the Portugal midfielder added.

Spaniard Alex Berenguer kept his place on the right wing for Ernesto Valverde's side having scored his first league goal of the season in last Saturday's 1-0 home win over Athletico Madrid.

Portugal's Nuno Mendes started at left-back for the visitors having missed their last two league games with a thigh issue.

Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele was rested due to an illness.

The best chance of the opening half an hour fell to PSG's Fabian Ruiz but he was unable to hit the target with a half volley after Senny Mayulu's floated pass.

Barely 10 seconds from the break 56-time international Simon was finally tested as he blocked Mayulu's effort from short range after a first half where the Parisians struggled to deal with the home side's high press.

Three minutes after the break Mayulu forced Simon into a superb save, the 19-year-old bursting into the Basque box before the keeper's outstanding block.

With half an hour to play Luis Enrique brougth Desire Doue on for Mayulu for his first game since suffering a hamstring injury on October 29, looking for the breakthrough.

Simon was beaten in the second-half, but Bradley Barcola's shot rebounded off the crossbar.

With less than four minutes left, Simon was once again called into action, blocking another Ruiz effort before captain Yuri Berchiche cleared the follow up shot off his own line.
