That's what it's about

  • A funicular railway derailed in Lisbon.
  • At least three people were killed in the accident.
  • More than 20 other people were injured.

A funicular railway has derailed in Lisbon. CNN Portugal reports at least three fatalities in the accident involving the tourist attraction. Twenty other people are injured. People are still trapped under the rubble.

Three of the injured are reportedly in critical condition. According to the Lisbon Civil Protection website, 56 emergency personnel are on site, supported by 19 vehicles.

The Elevador da Glória, which can carry up to 42 people, is one of Lisbon's landmarks and very popular with tourists visiting the city. The cause of the accident is unclear.

Car crashed into building

Eyewitness Teresa d'Avó reported the accident to the Portuguese TV station SIC. The cable car suddenly sped off and eventually crashed into a building without braking and with brutal force. Upon impact, the car shattered like a cardboard box.

Passersby initially ran away from the scene of the accident, Teresa said, probably out of fear of being hit by another car. Later, some returned, as can be seen on video footage, to help the victims.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa deeply regrets the accident, as he stated on the official presidential website. He particularly regrets the fatalities and serious injuries, as well as the several minor injuries.

The President of the Republic expresses his condolences and solidarity to the families affected by this tragedy and hopes that the incident will be quickly clarified by the competent authorities, added the Head of State.
