Trump cuts short meeting with European leaders and Zelensky to speak with Putin

Monday, August 18

The German newspaper"Bild" revealed that US President Donald Trump interrupted his talks with the leaders of the European Union and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to make a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The newspaper's correspondent, Paul Runzheimer, posted on the X platform:"Trump interrupted his conversation with Zelensky and the heads of EU governments to call Putin. The meetings with the heads of government and Zelensky in the Oval Office are scheduled to resume later."

Trump had previously announced his intention to call Putin after his meetings at the White House. The US president emphasized that ending the conflict over Ukraine requires a three-way meeting between Zelensky and Putin.

During his meeting with Zelensky at the White House, he added:"We (Putin and I) will call immediately after the meetings. We may or may not have a trilateral meeting. If the trilateral meeting does not take place, the fighting will continue. If it does take place, I believe we have a great chance for a possible end (to the conflict)."

Trump will meet with Zelensky and his European allies to brief them on the results of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and discuss the future of the Ukrainian crisis.
