A great joy is witnessed in various Moroccan regions with the return of rainfall to cover a number of parts of the Kingdom and in significant quantities, thus announcing the actual start of a new agricultural season that everyone hopes will be better than its predecessors, and more regular and continuous in rainfall to achieve results that make them forget the disappointments of past years.

The last few days have recorded significant rainfall, with the city of Tangier receiving the most, at a rate of 47 millimeters in just 24 hours. It exceeded the rate of thirty millimeters in several other cities, namely El Jadida, Chefchaouen, Kenitra, Agadir, Settat, Ben Slimane, Salé, Rabat and Mohammedia, while in many other areas it exceeded the rate of twenty millimeters, such as Essaouira and Larache.

These conditions created a sense of relief among farmers and those responsible for the sector, who were optimistic about the rain, which softened the atmosphere and unleashed a promising dynamic expected to create economic prosperity in the rural world, with a rising demand for labor.

Commenting on the matter, Abdel Salam Al-Bayari, President of the Regional Chamber of Agriculture in Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, said that the recorded rainfall came at the right time and achieves an ideal start to the new agricultural season.

Al-Bayari added, in a statement to the Hespress electronic newspaper, that the rains will motivate farmers and professionals to work more, as everyone will engage in agriculture after these conditions, stressing the need to expedite the granting of support to livestock breeders to achieve the expected shift with the start of the season.

The same spokesperson stressed that livestock are in dire need of fodder during the winter months, highlighting that farmers and livestock breeders need support and guidance during this stage of the season, which requires many expenses.

The same official called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to “support farmers and expedite direct support and extend the benefits to everyone,” expressing his hope that rainfall would continue regularly to achieve a good agricultural season, and stressing the importance of farmers having faith in God and the future, in order to overcome the situation characterized by drought over the past years.

For his part, agricultural expert Riad Ouhtita considered that the current agricultural season is getting off to a good start, but it remains just a beginning, and it is too early to talk about its promising results, stressing the importance of the continuation of rainfall at least until the end of next December to avoid the disastrous results of high temperatures, with a long period of lack of rainfall.

Ouhtita told Hespress that plant growth is hindered by cold weather in the absence of rainfall, highlighting that rising temperatures and the impact of climate change can cause the soil to lose moisture and lead to plant death.

The same expert stressed that “climate changes that have affected the Moroccan region have impacted the country and the succession of seasons, as we now have a long summer, a short winter, a short spring, and a long autumn, and therefore the plant does not live its natural productive life cycle.”

The same speaker noted that these changes have divided the kingdom into three regions, highlighting that the north and west have been producing 85% of the national grain production in recent years, while traditional regions such as Abda, Doukkala and Rehamna “are now forced not to plant in October.”

The agricultural expert stressed the importance of the Ministry of Agriculture's intervention to guide farmers in different regions in order to choose crops that suit each region, noting the importance of guiding them to achieve better yields,"because the country needs fodder crops and materials that can be a better option and alternative to grains."
