Police are hunting for Dezi Freeman, who they say is the self-declared"sovereign citizen" who shot dead two officers and wounded a third in Victoria's alpine region this morning.
Ten officers had gone to the home in Porepunkah, about 300 kilometres from Melbourne, to execute a warrant believed to be for historical sex abuse allegations when they were fired upon about 10.30am.
The officers killed were a 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said. Earlier reports suggested Freeman had fled with his family, but Bush said that was unconfirmed. As a result, police were trying to locate Freeman's family.
Marquees and floodlights have been set up at the scene, where rain has continued into the night, hampering police efforts to track down Freeman in the bush.
