Mexico City. After an extraordinary meeting with the security cabinet, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo condemned “with absolute firmness the vile assassination” of the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, Carlos Manzo, who was killed last night despite having federal security protection.
He stated on social media that he convened his security team this morning to guarantee support for Michoacán and ensure there is no impunity. “The territorial commanders of the Defense and National Guard were in communication with the mayor and he had federal protection,” he confirmed.
The head of the Executive Branch expressed her condolences to the family and loved ones of the mayor, as well as to the people of Uruapan"for this irreparable loss."
The members of the security cabinet left the National Palace after the meeting—which lasted more than an hour—without making any statements. They will hold a press conference in a few minutes.
He indicated that from the moment he became aware of this serious event, he spoke with the governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, and the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch.
The latter, he said, has maintained constant communication with the state prosecutor.
The president stated that at 11 a.m. the security cabinet will hold a press conference to report on the progress in the investigation of this case.
“Since the beginning of this administration, we have strengthened our security strategy. These regrettable events motivate us to strengthen it even further. We reaffirm our commitment to dedicate all the State's efforts to achieving peace and security with zero impunity and justice,” he stated.
